Preparation for Anesthesia
To undergo gastroscopy or colonoscopy under anesthesia (sedation), patients are required to bring the following test results on the day of the endoscopic procedure (no older than 3 months):
- Full blood count (FBC)
- Electrolytes – sodium, potassium
- Total bilirubin
- Creatinine
- Glucose
- APTT and INR (if the patient is taking anticoagulant medications)
- TSH (if the patient is taking thyroid hormone preparations – Euthyrox, Letrox)
- ECG (valid for 6 months)
- A prepared list of all currently taken medications
Patients undergoing a procedure under anesthesia must be accompanied by a responsible, able-bodied adult.
Fluids must not be consumed for at least 2 hours before the procedure. The last meal should be taken in accordance with the preparation instructions for the relevant examination (colonoscopy or gastroscopy).
The following documents must be completed and brought on the day of the procedure:
Anesthesia medical questionnaire
Anesthesia consent form
Patients with significant medical comorbidities — such as ischemic heart disease, a history of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), coronary stent placement, severe asthma, advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), poorly controlled diabetes, a history of thromboembolic events, or patients aged over 80 — are required to attend an anesthesiology consultation at our center prior to the procedure (see link for details).
