Preparation for gastroscopy

  1. On the day of the examination, please refrain from eating and drinking for at least 6 hours prior to the procedure. The patient must be fasting.
  2. Except when gastroscopy and colonoscopy are performed at the same time – in such cases, the bowel preparation liquid should be finished at least 2 hours before the examination.
  3. Patients with conditions requiring regular medication (e.g., hypertension, heart disease, epilepsy, etc.) should take their usual morning dose on the day of the examination with a small amount of water.
  4. Patients with diabetes should consult their doctor regarding preparation for the examination and inform the registration desk about their condition.
  5. Patients taking anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications (e.g., acenocoumarol, Sintrom, Ticlid, Plavix, aspirin, Acard, Acesan, etc.) should inform the physician performing the examination.
  6. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor regarding preparation for the examination.
  7. Patients who require reading glasses are asked to bring them along.
  8. Please report to the registration desk at least 30 minutes before the scheduled examination (applies to both local and general anesthesia).
  9. Before the examination under local anesthesia, you will be given a dose of 200 mg of simethicone dissolved in a small amount of water. This helps remove saliva from the surface of the mucosa, improving visibility during the examination and allowing even subtle changes to be detected. The preparation will be given immediately after registration.
  10. Patients undergoing intravenous sedation may receive this preparation during the examination via the endoscope channel, if necessary.
  11. If the procedure is performed under general anesthesia, the patient will remain under observation for a short time and may then go home accompanied by an adult. There is a strict 12-hour prohibition on driving, operating machinery, and consuming alcohol. In very rare cases, a longer observation period in a hospital ward may be required. Please take this into account when planning your day.
  12. The scheduled time of the examination may change, as the duration of procedures can be difficult to predict.
