What Does a Colonoscopy Examination Involve?

Colonoscopy

is a method of endoscopic assessment of the large intestine. It is the best available examination of the large intestine, enabling direct and highly accurate evaluation, polyp removal, and the collection of tissue samples for histopathological examination.

The procedure is performed using a colonoscope — a flexible probe 130–160 cm in length, equipped with a video imaging system. The image of the interior of the intestine is displayed on a monitor and assessed by the physician in real time. During the examination, it is also possible to perform biopsies and therapeutic interventions, such as polypectomy or the management of bleeding. Colonoscopy requires bowel preparation (cleansing) prior to the procedure.
